Did the conflict resolution and peace keeping fail in Srebrenica?
The failure of this mission was in the Security Council. There contradicting messages given to the troops firstly stated to “deter attacks against the safe areas” (Resolution 15) however could not use force, only in self-defence. Conflict was not resolved between the two ethnicities and peacekeeping operations failed to save the lives of thousands of innocent people.
“…we tried to keep peace and apply the rules of peacekeeping when there was no peace to keep,”
Kofi Annan stated, (BBC News, 1999).
The UN has failed another mission that had similar intentions to the holocaust. Not only have they failed Rwanda, the failed in Srebrenica two events which what the UN was supposedly created to stop from occurring. They also have failed in the Middle East that differs from Rwanda and Srebrenica, and shows no signs of peace progressing.
