How did the UN fail in the Syrian Civil war?
The United Nations has failed to help the Syrian people as no action has been taken to conflict resolve or keep peace. The UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has given an apology to the Syrian people as the talks in Geneva "ended without any progress" and admits the conference "had not come out with very much," (Haaretz, 2014).
Our collective failure to prevent atrocity crimes in Syria over the past two and a half years will remain a heavy burden on the standing of the United Nations and it's member states."
Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary general of the UN
(Gladstone, 2013)
The UN have not been able to achieve peace nor use a process of conflict resolution as the structure and rules of the Security Council have allowed China and Russia to bypass any action, which justifies the thesis statement. They also have failed as they have allowed "...Syria's government and rebel forces have committed murder, torture, rape and indiscriminate attacks on civilians without fear of punishment." (Gladstone, 2013).
Ultimately the structure of the Security Council and many rules, restrictions and mandates have been the contributing failures to not only the Syrian civil war however the Rwanda genocide and Srebrenica massacre. The UN has allowed violations around the world, have failed mass murders and overall have failed their main purpose. Therefore making the United Nations unsuccessful in conflict resolving and peace keeping.
